Aviation figured this out decades ago: competent people forget steps under time pressure, so the fix is a list, not more competence. FBA prep has the same shape. None of the individual checks are hard; what bites sellers is the one skipped item on shipment forty-three, discovered three weeks later as a problem flag or a stranded batch.
Order matters more than most guides admit. Labeling wrong goods wastes the labels. Perfect cartons full of unbagged liquids fail anyway. And since January 2026 there is no recovery lane at the far end — Amazon no longer preps or labels in the US, and unprepped inventory that's damaged or lost is outside reimbursement. The checklist is the safety net now.
One deliberate omission: this page names no specific size or weight numbers. Amazon publishes its current carton, pallet and prep requirements in Seller Central and revises them; a checklist with stale numbers is worse than one that says 'check the live limit.' Count against the PO, photograph condition, confirm variant and packaging version match the listing. Prep starts only after the goods prove they're the right goods.

Count the units against the purchase order, inspect condition with photos, and confirm the goods match the listing — right variant, right color, right packaging version. Prep applied to short-shipped, damaged or wrong goods is wasted money, and supplier claims get harder every day after delivery. This is why our receiving step always runs before our prep bench touches anything.
That prep and labeling ownership are set to seller for every SKU in the shipping plan — mandatory since Amazon discontinued its US prep and labeling services on January 1, 2026 — and that the plan's SKUs, quantities and prep categories match what will physically ship. A perfect physical prep job under a wrong plan still produces a problem shipment.
Every unit carries the correct FNSKU for its exact variant; the label covers or supersedes the manufacturer barcode so only one code scans; placement is flat, not over seams or curves; print quality survives handling; and each label is scan-verified after application. Variant mix-ups deserve special paranoia — size 'M' labels on size 'L' units pass every visual check and fail every customer.
Product attributes that obligate specific prep under Amazon's current requirements: exposed or loose product triggers poly bagging with suffocation warnings, fragile items trigger cushioning, liquids trigger sealed bagging, multi-piece sets trigger bundling as one unit, and dated goods trigger expiration labeling. The checklist question per SKU is 'which attributes does this product have, and is the matching prep applied?' — not 'does this look fine?'
The reliable method is procedural: record contents as each carton is packed, from what actually went in, and never retype data from the shipping plan afterward. Then spot-audit — open a sealed carton and compare against its declared contents. If your packer and your data-entry person are different people working at different times, you have found your mismatch factory.

Amazon's current inbound freight standards cover pallet type and condition, stack height, overhang (none), stretch wrap, and pallet labels placed where dock workers can scan them. LTL and FTL appointments also require accurate shipment data ahead of arrival. Freight refused at the fulfillment center door costs you the round trip plus the delay — pallet compliance is cheap by comparison.
