Check-in failures are declaration gaps

Quick answer: FBA inbound problems cluster into five patterns — box content mismatches, unscannable labels, prep noncompliance, dimension disputes and partial receives. All five share one anatomy: the shipping plan declared one reality and the freight delivered another. Prevention means closing that gap before departure, which is the structural job of a prep center.

Amazon's receiving is a matching machine. Your shipping plan declares SKUs, quantities, prep states and carton contents; the dock verifies them at industrial speed. When declaration and physical reality agree, freight flows. When they diverge — a mislabeled unit here, an undercounted carton there — the machine stops matching and starts investigating, and your inventory waits while it does.

The frustrating part for sellers is that the divergence almost never happens at Amazon. It happens weeks earlier: a supplier who shipped short, a label file printed at the wrong density, a packing bench where two similar SKUs shared a table. By the time the notice appears in Seller Central, the cause is cold and the evidence is scattered across three parties in two countries.

Since January 2026 the stakes are steeper. Amazon no longer offers prep or labeling fixes at its US fulfillment centers, and unprepped inventory that gets damaged or lost sits outside reimbursement. What are the most common FBA inbound shipment problems at check-in?

Five patterns account for most inbound pain: box content mismatches (declared contents disagree with the physical carton), unscannable or wrong FNSKU labels, prep noncompliance (missing bags, warnings or bundling), dimension and weight disputes on cartons or units, and partial receives where Amazon checks in fewer units than you shipped. Why does Amazon flag a box content mismatch on my inbound shipment?

Because the carton's declared SKUs or quantities didn't match what Amazon's receiving found inside. Root causes are almost always upstream: the packer worked from a plan that changed afterward, similar SKUs got mixed at the bench, or the content file was typed by hand at midnight. Repeated mismatches degrade how smoothly your future shipments flow through receiving, so the fix matters beyond one shipment.

What makes FNSKU labels unscannable at Amazon's receiving?

Low-quality printing (worn thermal heads, wrong DPI), labels applied over seams or curved edges, ink smear from laser sheets, shrink wrap distorting the barcode, and labels that peel in transit. The unit becomes anonymous at check-in — Amazon can't tie it to your account without investigation. Prevention is mechanical: print clean, place flat, and scan every label after applying it, which is exactly what our bench does.

What counts as prep noncompliance on an inbound FBA shipment?

Any unit arriving without the prep Amazon's current requirements assign to it: liquids without sealed bags, textiles without poly bags and suffocation warnings, fragile goods without cushioning, multi-piece sets not secured as one sellable unit. Since Amazon ended its own US prep services on January 1, 2026, noncompliant units can no longer be fixed at the fulfillment center — and damage to unprepped inventory falls outside reimbursement.

Why is Amazon disputing my product's dimensions and weight?

Amazon re-measures items during receiving, and its measurement can differ from your listing data — sometimes because packaging changed at the factory without anyone updating the listing, sometimes because a bag or bundle altered the effective size. Since size tiers drive fulfillment fees under Amazon's current schedule, a wrong measurement quietly reprices every future order. Catching a packaging change at a prep warehouse, before inbound, is the cheap moment to catch it.

What causes a partial receive, where Amazon checks in fewer units than I shipped?

Three families of cause: the shortfall was real (your supplier shipped short and nobody counted), units became unidentifiable (label failures make units uncountable against your shipment), or Amazon's count is still in progress or genuinely wrong. Your leverage in a discrepancy case is documentation — independent counts, photos, carton-level data. Sellers who route freight through a prep center have exactly that evidence on file.

How does a prep center structurally prevent FBA inbound problems?

By collapsing the gap between what's declared and what's physical. The same operation that counts your units generates the box content data; the same bench that applies labels scan-verifies them; the same team that preps to Amazon's current requirements builds the cartons and pallets.
